If Republicans in Congress get their way, the number of nuclear facilities in the United States could double within the next two decades. At a hearing chaired by Senator Robert Bennett (R-UT), a group of nuclear scientists and economists called for the building of 100 new nuclear plants in the United States over the next twenty years. The witnesses suggested that such a dramatic expansion of nuclear power would not produce any more waste than many other types of energy and technological improvements already being used in Europe can reduce the amount even more.
