This past month, President Barack Obama expressed his appreciation for the men and women of the Joint Terrorism Task Force for uncovering the plot to kill Americans with homemade bombs. “You’re showing us what focused and integrated counterterrorism work really looks like,” Obama told task force members. “ The record of your service is written in the attacks that never occur – because you thwarted them.”
The President was referring to the arrest of Mohammed Zazi, the central figure in a plot to target the New York City transit system. Zazi has been indicted in a Denver court for conspiring to detonate weapons of mass destruction in the United States. He was not the only alleged terrorist arrested. In October, Hosam Maher Husein Smadi was arrested for trying to bomb a skyscraper in downtown Dallas, and Michael C. Finton, a.k.a., “Talib Islam,” was arrested for trying to bomb the federal courthouse in Springfield, Ill. Finton reportedly abandoned a van in front of the building and then attempted to use a cellular phone to detonate the bomb inside.
